Community Counseling
It is my firm belief that education counseling also
has a community focus. For me, that has evolved over a period of
more than 20 years. I first became an educator on July 1, 1987
working as an ESL/English teacher in Carver Middle School (L.A.U.S.D). It
was at Carver where I had extensive dialogues with Mr. Charles
Caballero, our principal, about defining problems to educate our
students. He gave me a lot of room to find myself as a professional.
One day he took me on a tour to visit nonprofit agencies in the
community. As we continued to dialogue that day he made it clear
that we needed to better coordinate how the various existing
community based resources could serve our students. It was at that
point I realized the importance of a greater connectedness with
community as a means to better educate students.
